Historically, Notre Dame has been a football dynasty, but in recent years the Fighting Irish have been on the decline. Notre Dame is on track to beat the school’s all time losing record in a four-year span. Assuming Notre Dame loses to 4-3 Tulsa this Saturday, the Fighting Irish will break the record on the following home game, November 13 against No.8 Utah. While The Gipper may be rolling over in his grave, Notre Dame seniors are embracing the all time losing record. The Notre Dame Observer posted this letter to the editor asking students to rush the field after the Utah loss: The senior class is on the brink of an achievement that has never been accomplished. Assuming (and this is a big assumption) that the football team beats Tulsa this weekend, the game against Utah will be our chance to break the record for most losses in a four-year period, previously held by the Class of 1964. When we get steamrolled by Utah on Nov. 13, we will officially be the losingest class in Notre Dame History. That day will also be Senior Day, a day that the senior class is allowed on the field at the end … Continue ...

Joe Montana’s son may be a walk on freshmen quarterback at Notre Dame, but apparently Joe Cool is not a fan of the movie Rudy. The made for movie Rudy moment at Notre Dame actually happened when Montana was playing there. When asked about it in a radio interview, Montana said: “Well, the crowd wasn’t chanting. No one threw in their jerseys. He did get in the game. He got carried off [at the end of] the game. [...] Back then they tried to play someone at the end of [the season] that all the seniors could get in the last home game. The schedule was kind of set that way. So he got in. He did get a sack. And then the guys carried him off, just playing around. I won’t say it was a joke, but it was playing around. He worked his butt off to get where he was and to do the things he did. But not any harder than anyone else.”

We still have a few months before college football starts, but college sports could change as we know it. Four new mega-conferences are expected to emerge including: the Big 10, Pac-10, ACC, and SEC. These four conferences are already the dominate conferences in college football, winning the most championships and dominating television markets. However their emergence as a mega-conference poses threats to conferences left out like the Big 12 and Big East. Other college football traditionalists are also worried about rivalries becoming extinct with the creation of mega-conferences. Below are the teams rumored to be joining the mega-conferences. Pac-10: Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M & Colorado Big 10: Nebraska, Missouri, Maryland & Rutgers SEC : Clemson & Oklahoma ACC: West Virgina, Pittsburgh, Syracuse & Connecticut * What is interesting is Notre Dame is not listed as one of the teams who will join a mega-conference. Currently, Notre Dame is independent and does not belong to any particular conference. By being independent, Notre Dame can negotiate exclusive TV contracts, which means big money for the school. However, with the expansion of college football to mega-conferences, Notre Dame remaining independent is not as exclusive as it once was.
