Last night, the Philadelphia Flyers won in overtime, overcoming a 3-0 deficit in the first game of the opening round of the playoffs against the rival Pittsburgh Penguins… and they did it without their lucky ribs. The Flyers have credited much of their 6-1 all-time record in the Penguins’ new arena to Dee Jay’s BBQ ribs. Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette revealed, “We buy ribs from DeeJays in Weirton after the game and have them delivered to the plane. And those ribs seem to be doing the trick. It went back to last year, too. Whenever the ribs are ordered, we win. I want to thank DeeJays.” Unfortunately for the Flyers, the owner of DeeJay’s if a Penguins fan and didn’t appreciate Laviolette making it known that he was aiding, embedding and feeding the enemy. ”I am a Penguin fan, not a Flyer fan. What happened was sometime last year, Peter wanted to treat his guys to some ribs, so I said sure. They were playing the Penguins and I brought the ribs up to the plane. Since the Pens moved to the Consol Center they haven’t beaten the Flyers and on each occasion, I took ribs up to their plane,” restaurant owner Dewey Guida … Continue ...

To prove his Penguins fanhood and keep his loyal Pittsburgh customers, Guida has banned the Phialdelphia Flyers from ordering ribs telling the Steubenville Herald-Star, ”No more ribs for them, and I pray, I hope, that the Penguins beat their skates off.”

The Disney on Ice production is scheduled to be in Tampa Bay for Games 3 and 4 of the Eastern Conference playoffs, coenciding with when the Lightning play at home. Despite sweeping the Washington Capitals in the second round, the Lightning have been waiting to start their next series as the Detroit Red Wings have pushed the San Jose Sharks to a Game 7. An important part of history, even the FBI has investigated the whereabouts of the mysterious puck. Now almost a year later, there may be a break in the case of the missing puck. Steve Miller, an 11-year NHL linesmen, has been removed from working any playoff games for the remainder of the season. Miller reffed the night of the Stanley Cup, and in amateur video shot of the game winning goal, Miller is seen a “small black object” in the goal crease. While Miller denies any wrong doing, you can’t help but wonder what the puck happened to it?

The long standing tradition is being penalized with will be ejected, fined $500, face a court hearing, and possibly sent to jail if you do not pay $150. Just ask Wings fan Tommy B. who learned the hard way who threw an octopus on during the third period of Game 1.

The Red Wings released the following statement: It’s not a new law — city ordinance 38-5-4, which prohibits throwing objects on the playing area during sporting events — but the directive to enforce it came down Wednesday from the league. Wings blog On The Wings spoke to Detroit police, who say that while they have no problems with the tradition,
Police supervisors were informed Wednesday night, either before or during the game, by League representatives that they don’t want anything thrown on the ice. An officer has to witness the throw and nab the thrower on the spot, but it’s something they can and will enforce. Apparently, distance from players is not an issue: any octopus on the ice is grounds for ejection and a fine.

The throwing of objects onto the ice surface is prohibited by the National Hockey League and persons caught doing so may be subject to prosecution for violating local and state laws.”

The tradition of throwing an octopus on the ice started almost 60 years ago. In 1952, the Red Wings swept all eight games need to win the Stanley Cup against the Montreal Canadians and Toronto Maple Leafs. Long time Red Wings, Chris Osgood was infuriated with the new rules and spoke candidly.

Interestingly enough, the Red Wings will kick fans out of games but sell merchandise with the teams’s unoffical mascot Al the Octopus?
