Last night, the Philadelphia Flyers won in overtime, overcoming a 3-0 deficit in the first game of the opening round of the playoffs against the rival Pittsburgh Penguins… and they did it without their lucky ribs. The Flyers have credited much of their 6-1 all-time record in the Penguins’ new arena to Dee Jay’s BBQ ribs. Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette revealed, “We buy ribs from DeeJays in Weirton after the game and have them delivered to the plane. And those ribs seem to be doing the trick. It went back to last year, too. Whenever the ribs are ordered, we win. I want to thank DeeJays.” Unfortunately for the Flyers, the owner of DeeJay’s if a Penguins fan and didn’t appreciate Laviolette making it known that he was aiding, embedding and feeding the enemy. ”I am a Penguin fan, not a Flyer fan. What happened was sometime last year, Peter wanted to treat his guys to some ribs, so I said sure. They were playing the Penguins and I brought the ribs up to the plane. Since the Pens moved to the Consol Center they haven’t beaten the Flyers and on each occasion, I took ribs up to their plane,” restaurant owner Dewey Guida … Continue ...

The most hyped NHL player since Wayne Gretzky suffered a head concussion in January, and his return date remains up in the air. Just ask NY Islanders goalie Rick DiPerto who will miss the next 4-6 weeks from facial fractures and knee swelling. DiPerto squared off with Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Brent Johnson on Wednesday where he was not only beat up at center ice but in the crease, the Islanders lost to the Pens, 3-0…. bringing their record to a depressing 16-28-7. DiPerto told reporters: “I’m sick of losing, our team’s sick of losing. You never go into a fight expecting you’re going to get smashed in the face that hard, or with these kind of consequences, but it happens and you move on.” From the looks of the fight, it looks as if Johnson has been watching the Jersey Shore and stealing Ronnie’s moves… “That’s one shot.”

The football legend was in a charity hockey shootout with fellow Pittsburgh Steelers legend Franco Harris during the intermission of the Winter Classic. The Pittsburgh Penguins, who are down 2-1 against the Washington Capitals during the second intermission, could use Bettis’ help since he scored nine goals to Harris’ seven, but the highlight of the competition was when the gentlemen were given the opportunity to throw a football.
Hockey stars Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin are in the new issue of Vanity Fair for the January 1st Winter Classic against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals. The NHL tried to leverage the metrosexual readership of Vanity Fair to expand their fanbase for a sport where the mullet is acceptable and fighting is encouraged. Despite the NHL’s effort, Vanity Fair only printed a 290-word preice withouth any quotes form either athlete. But let’s face it, Vanity Fair is way classier than anything Ovechkin would have said. This year’s Winter Classic is at Pittsburgh Steeler’s Heinz Field, and while the Capitals don’t have a particularly strong fan base, the main reason for this match up is because of the Ovechkin Crosby rivalry. The two stars are polar opposite, not only in their playing style but Ovechkin loves his Russian ladies… while Crosby still lives at the home of Penguins owner Mario Lemuiex. In a Vanity Fair online exclusive interview, Crosby touches on their rivalry saying, “It always feels like there’s a bit more there just because of the emotion, because of the intensity. I guess that’s what makes rivalries—when it seems like there’s a little bit extra there…He’s got speed; … Continue ...

I guess that’s what makes rivalries—when it seems like there’s a little bit extra there…He’s got speed; he’s big; he’s physical. He can score from pretty much anywhere.”

Another noteworthy comment from Crosby is that his favorite player is Steve Yzerman. After being a fan of Crosby from when he was 13 (creepy I know), I had to abruptly end my Crosby fanhood when he cheated me out of seeing the Red Wings win two Stanley Cups in person (2008′s Game 5 and 2009′s Game 7). Finding out Crosby is a fan of Yzerman, only the greatest player ever, may have just reignited the flame.

The picture above is of Pittsburgh Penguins captain and hockey golden boy Sidney Crosby fighting Dallas Stars’ Matt Niskanen. This is Crosby’s fifth fight in his NHL career. The altercation came late in the game as the Penguins were down 4-1. Normally, players do Crosby’s dirty work for him, but he tried the tactic to rally the troops. Unfortunately, it did not work as the Penguins lost 5-2. I suspect after the game was over, Penguins owner and hockey legend Mario Lemieux grounded Crosby from TV for a month. Crosby has taken a lot of flack for living with Lemieux from 2005 until this season.
