The Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers and NY Jets are all one game closer to the Super Bowl. All teams are excited, but Jets Bart Scott took it to a whole other level….
I normally don’t root against the Detroit Red Wings, but a Columbus Blue Jacket’s fan started a Twitter revolution during the Blue Jackets game on Friday against the Wings. In an effort to beat their division rival, Jackets fan Tyler Schweinfurth tweeted he would donate $20 to the player who scored the game winning goal to the “money on the board.” “Money on the board” is a tradition in hockey where players right down a money sum on a whiteboard before a big game. The money is only collected if the team wins and is normally donated to a charity.
The Blue Jackets got in on Schweinfurth tweet and so did 150 other fans (including Red Wings fans). It’s a good thing Columbus won because $10,000 was donated to charities including the Red Cross and the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation. RJ Umberger scored in a shootout to make it 3-2.
Halfway through the most hyped game of the NFL playoffs and the NY Jets lead the New England Patriots 14-3. Headlines leading up to the game were not about the players but more so the trash talking. Patriots head coach Bill Belichik warned his players to not participate in the he said she said. But Pats WR Wes Welker not only ignored his coach’s orders but delivered one of the most memorable press conferences, referencing feet or toes 11 times, in response to Rex Ryan’s foot fetish scandal. Despite leading the Patriots in receiving during the regular season, Welker was benched for the start of the game!
13-year old Grendon Bailie was sent home from school after he wore a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey on Seattle Seahawks Appreciate Day. Tacoma School District spokeswoman Stacy Flores said, “This boy came in a different color, a different team, and he was asked, if he didn’t want to participate in the Seahawks colors day, then he could wear his uniform.”
Ballie’s father supports his son’s decision who said, “Not everyone is a Seahawks fan – and if they got to wear their team stuff then I should, too.”
In America we have freedom of speech and religion but not freedom of sports teams.
