Colorado Rockies pitcher Jeremy Guthrie needed someone to play catch with on the team’s off-day, so the nine-year veteran turned to his over 34,000 followers. 21-year old Woody Roseland just happened to be checking his Twitter stream when he tweeted, “I live downtown, I have my glove. So I said, let’s do this,” Roseland said. Within 15-minutes, Roseland was at Coors Field with the Rookie’s newest acquisition.
Playing catch with a major leaguer wasn’t even the best part of Roseland’s day. Earlier that afternoon Roseland found out he won his 5-year battle with cancer. After two-and-a-half years of chemotherapy and losing his left leg to a rare-form of bone cancer at age 16, Roseland was officially done with treatment.
Ironically, it wasn’t Roseland’s life that was changed it was Guthrie’s. After meeting Roseland, Guthrie said, “I went out to make a fan’s day and instead he made mine. I not only met a fan, I made a friend for life.”
To Catch a Predator Chris Hansen better be on the look out for college basketball coaches. 8th grader Eron Gordon was offered his first college scholarship to Indiana University. But Gordon already has a proven pedigree, his older brother Eric Gordon, who plays for the New Orleans Hornets and spent one year at Indiana University, leading the Big 10 in scoring.
Hoosier head coach Tom Crean offered Gordon the scholarship after seeing him play in the 15-and-under Eric Gordon Central Stars at the IndyBall.com Shootout over the weekend. Gordon is keeping his options open, taking an unofficial visit to Purdue this week. Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Xavier and Wisconsin are also said to be interested in the 6-1 middle schooler.
New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie became more famous for not remembering the names of his 10 children than his plays on Sunday during the HBO reality series Hard Knocks. Despite his reality TV fame, Cromartie is blocking a reality show following the 8 woman he has fathered 10 of his children with.
The New York Post is reporting that the series would be based on Cromartie’s 8 mothers as they “trying to co-exist as a modern family.” The mothers live in California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and New Jersey. Although a production company has already gotten approval from the majority of the mothers, the pro-bowler has been adament he wants no part of the series.
However, one mother Ryan Ross argues, “Our kids need to know who their siblings are. It’s bigger than our past with Antonio. It’s about our children.”
In 2010, Cromartie was criticized for struggling to remember the names of all of his children while HBO documented the Jets training camp in Hard Knocks. Cromartie who makes $8 million a year, 7 of the 8 baby mamas $3,500 a month in child support. Lucky for Cromartie, he can turn to teammate Tim Tebow for moral advice.
