Athletes are notorious for doing stupid things, and a DUI falls nothing short…. but Oakland A’s outfielder Coco Crisp took it a step further. Not only was the switch hitter arrested for driving under the influence but now new details have been released that his private security team was following Crisp on the night of his DUI.
According to Scottsdale police, Crisp blew a .13 blood alcohol level. Crisp was driving a 2009 Rolls Royce that was being followed by a Dodge pickup truck. Crisp told police “there were some issues with some people so the secret service was providing security.
Coco joins Miguel Cabrera as the second baseball player to be pulled over for a DUI during spring training.
The Chicago Cubs are using Derek Jeter in their single game ticket sale campaign. The New York Yankees come to Chicago every ten years… so this really is a once in a decade opportunity. After being arrested for a DUI, Detroit Tigers Miguel Cabrera is not reporting to spring training camp and won’t for a long time. According to Tigers GM Dave Dumbrowski, Cabrera’s return will be determined by doctors appointed by the team and MLB Players Union. “Any time you deal with alcoholism and an addiction, you realize it’s an ongoing battle,” Dombrowski said.
Cabrera was discovered by police drinking a bottle of scotch on the side of the road after his car broke down. The 27-year old was en route to the Tiger’ spring training camp from his South Florida home and resisted arrest from police.
The DUI arrest marks Cabrera’s second public battle with alcohol in the past two years. In 2009, during a playoff race, Cabrera had to be picked up at a police station by Dumbrowski after police were called to his home for domestic violence. Cabrera had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit and scratches on is face. The following day, the Tigers lost to the Chicago White Sox and failed to make the post-season. Last January, it was reported Cabrera had a three month stint in rehab.
