Baseball playoffs begin tomorrow on TBS, and the network has decided to spice things up by adding batting cages inside the analysts studio. Disaster waiting to happen or the making of some great TV? Below is a schedule of the firs three games of the opening round.
The Tampa Bay Rays clinched the AL east and celebrated by making a makeshift slip ‘n slide out of a plastic tarp and champagne in their clubhouse at Kauffman Stadium. This is the Rays third AL East title in three seasons. Tampa Bay clinched the division on Sunday and will play the Texas Rangers in the opening round of the playoffs. Despite the Rays division title, the Minnesota Twins are the favorite to come out of the American League. The Twins face a tough opponent in the defending champions New York Yankees.
On Tuesday, the Cincinnati Reds clinched their first division title and playoff appearance in 15-years. The Reds beat the Houston Astros 3-2, when outfielder Jay Bruce hit a walkoff home run. Celebrating in style, players smoked victory cigars in the clubhouse, causing five Cincinnatians, who were at home watching the game, to call the Health Department to report a violation.
Under Ohio law, no one can smoke indoors, which includes baseball parks. The Heath Department will send Reds owner Bob Castellini an official letter notifying him of the violation.Within the next 30 days, a health inspector will make an unannounced visit to the clubhouse to investigate further violations. If he finds anyone smoking in the clubhouse, the Reds will be fined $100.00. (more…)
A fan at last night’s Cleveland Indians Detroit Tigers game caught a foul ball while holding a baby. What will probably get him in trouble with from his wife, it was great for the SportsCenter highlights. The Indians beat the Tigers 4-0, although the game didn’t mean much to either team, who are 13 and 25 games back respectively. Still, it’ll make a great story for when the kid is older at how his dad sacrificed his life for a foul ball.
