Judge rules: Cheerleading is not a sport

A federal judge has ruled that cheerleading is not an official sport. The women’s volleyball team at Quinnipiac University sued the college because it cut the volleyball program in order to save money. The team accused the college of favoring male sports. Under Title IX, schools must spend equal money on male and female athletics.

Us District Judge Stefan Underhill said: “Competitive cheer may, some time in the future qualify as a sport under Title IX. Today, however, the activity is still too underdeveloped and disorganized to be treated as offering genuine varsity athletic participation opportunities for students.”
