Dwyane Wade & Ray Allen want to be paid to play in Olympics

Playing for your country isn’t enough for some NBA players. FoxSports.com is reporting future Hall of Famers Ray Allen and Dwyane Wade want to be paid to play in the Olympics in London this summer.

According to Allen, “Everybody says, ‘Play for your country.’ But [N.B.A. players are] commodities, your businesses. You think about it, you do camps in the summer, you have various opportunities to make money. When you go overseas and play basketball, you lose those opportunities, what you may make… If I’m an accountant and I get outsourced by my firm, I’m going to make some money somewhere else.”

Apparently making $18 million a season isn’t enough for the Miami Heat super star. Wade told ESPN: “It’s a lot of things you do for the Olympics — a lot of jerseys you sell. We play the whole summer. I do think guys should be compensated. Just like I think college players should be compensated as well.”

Wade and Allen have both been apart of Olympic gold medal teams in 2008 and 2004 respectivley. But in 2004, in the midst of player rifts and lack of enthusiasm Team USA finished a disappointing third becoming the first U.S. men’s basketball team with NBA players to lose an Olympic game. It was reported Wade along with Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James and Carlos Boozer made a pact to win gold, earning the nickname redeem team. But apparently, green is better than gold.

Sir Paul McCartney headlining London 2012

The London 2012 Olympic Games has announced Sir Paul McCartney will headline the opening ceremonies. The committee wanted to honor British music with an all British lineup, but after the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin turned down the chance to play at the games.

“The hope was to have the cream of British music all in the lineup, but it now looks like Macca [McCartney] will be joined by some younger stars on stage,” reports the Daily Mirror. “But of all the people you would want, McCartney is No 1. He is the ultimate showman and guaranteed to get the Olympics off to a great start.”

While many Beatles fans were hoping the only other surviving Beatle Ringo Star would join him, the famous drummer will be touring in the US during the Olympics.

The London 2012 games will be compared to the Beijing opening ceremonies, who set the bar high with 15,000 performers and a budget of more than $100 million.

New Jersey blocks former Olympian from running for Senate

Despite winning 9 gold medals for the United States, New Jersey has banned former Olympian Carl Lewis form running for Senate. NJ Secretary of State Kim Guadagno has removed Lewis’ name from the June Democratic primary ballot claiming Lewis does not meet the state’s four-year residency requirement to run for office.

Lewis’ residency has been called into question because the he paid income taxes in California. Sports Illustrated’s “Olympian of the Century” plans to appeal the ruling saying, “I’ve been in competition for a long time so nothing surprises me,” he said. “What’s sad, though, is who’s talking about the people of the 8th District? The kids whose schools are struggling? The seniors who are having trouble paying their taxes?”

Lewis won 10 Olympic medals in track and field during the 1984, 88, 92 and 96 games. Maybe Lewis needs his long-form birth certificate?!?
