Double-amputee one race away from qualifying for Olympics

Oscar Pistorius could become the first amputee runner to compete in the Olympics this summer in London. The double-amputee advanced to the 400-meter final at the South African Championships but fell short of qualifying to the Olympics by two seconds. Pistorius ran the 400 meters in 47.28 seconds finishing seventh in windy conditions.

The South African Track and Field Association requires Olympians to run the 400 meters in under 45.3 seconds. Pistorius is the only South African runner to have one qualifying run, finishing the 400 meters in 45.20 last month and has until June to qualify for the 2012 Games.

Pistorius was born with congenital absence of the fibula in both legs, which were amputated when he was only 11 months old. It was until 2004 that Pistorius began running after a knee injury from rugby.

Nicknamed Blade Runner, Pistorius remains hopeful for London. “I’m flirting a little bit with the idea,” Pistorius told The Associated Press. “The team still has to get selected. My job is just to work hard until then and prove I’m in the right condition to be quite a strong 400 meter athlete if I get called up.”

“Good luck” ribs banned for Philadelphia Flyers during Penguins series

Last night, the Philadelphia Flyers won in overtime, overcoming a 3-0 deficit in the first game of the opening round of the playoffs against the rival Pittsburgh Penguins… and they did it without their lucky ribs. The Flyers have credited much of their 6-1 all-time  record in the Penguins’ new arena to Dee Jay’s BBQ ribs.

Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette revealed, “We buy ribs from DeeJays in Weirton after the game and have them delivered to the plane. And those ribs seem to be doing the trick. It went back to last year, too. Whenever the ribs are ordered, we win. I want to thank DeeJays.”

Unfortunately for the Flyers, the owner of DeeJay’s if a Penguins fan and didn’t appreciate Laviolette making it known that he was aiding, embedding and feeding the enemy.  ”I am a Penguin fan, not a Flyer fan. What happened was sometime last year, Peter wanted to treat his guys to some ribs, so I said sure. They were playing the Penguins and I brought the ribs up to the plane. Since the Pens moved to the Consol Center they haven’t beaten the Flyers and on each occasion, I took ribs up to their plane,” restaurant owner Dewey Guida said. “Little did I know he would go into the press conference and say the reason they won was our ribs.”

To prove his Penguins fanhood and keep his loyal Pittsburgh customers, Guida has banned the Phialdelphia Flyers from ordering ribs telling the Steubenville Herald-Star,  ”No more ribs for them, and I pray, I hope, that the Penguins beat their skates off.”

Dwyane Wade & Ray Allen want to be paid to play in Olympics

Playing for your country isn’t enough for some NBA players. FoxSports.com is reporting future Hall of Famers Ray Allen and Dwyane Wade want to be paid to play in the Olympics in London this summer.

According to Allen, “Everybody says, ‘Play for your country.’ But [N.B.A. players are] commodities, your businesses. You think about it, you do camps in the summer, you have various opportunities to make money. When you go overseas and play basketball, you lose those opportunities, what you may make… If I’m an accountant and I get outsourced by my firm, I’m going to make some money somewhere else.”

Apparently making $18 million a season isn’t enough for the Miami Heat super star. Wade told ESPN: “It’s a lot of things you do for the Olympics — a lot of jerseys you sell. We play the whole summer. I do think guys should be compensated. Just like I think college players should be compensated as well.”

Wade and Allen have both been apart of Olympic gold medal teams in 2008 and 2004 respectivley. But in 2004, in the midst of player rifts and lack of enthusiasm Team USA finished a disappointing third becoming the first U.S. men’s basketball team with NBA players to lose an Olympic game. It was reported Wade along with Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James and Carlos Boozer made a pact to win gold, earning the nickname redeem team. But apparently, green is better than gold.
