Roger Clemens indicted on steroid charges

A federal grand jury indicted baseball legend Roger Clemens for lying about steroid use. The 7-time Cy Young Award winner faces charges of obstruction of Congress, perjury, and making false statements. During an investigation on the MLB’s steroid use, Clemens told a House committee in a 2008 hearing that his wife had used human growth hormones but not him. Clemen’s former trainer on the other hand told the same committee that he injected Clemens more than a dozen times from 1998-2001. Clemens is facing some serious jail time but like any strategic defendant, took to his Twitter to defend himself saying:

“I never took HGH or Steroids. And I did not lie to Congress. I look forward to challenging the Governments accusations, and hope people will keep an open mind until trial. I appreciate all the support I have been getting. I am happy to finally have my day in court.”

The Rays will all wear matching plaid blazer for their west cost road trip, which Maddon nickednamed “bRAYSers” Maddon created a new team policy that all team personnel must work the word Rays into as many puns as possible. It must be working, since the Rays are in first place!

Mike Ilitch to buy the pistons

Mike Ilitch, Detroit businessman and owners of the Detroit Red Wings and Tigers now wants to buy the Pistons. The Detroit Pistons are for sale after long time owner Bill Davidson died last year. Davidson’s wife, Karen, is now selling the team, meaning they may not stay in Detroit!

“When I read in the paper there was the chance that this great sports town could lose one of its professional sports franchises, I just didn’t see how we could let that happen,” Ilitch said. “The Pistons, just like the Red Wings, Tigers and the Lions, have a rich and storied tradition in this community.”

While Ilitch has led the Red Wings to four Stanley Cups and a Tigers World Series appearance in 2006, he has also come under criticism for fans for not paying enough attention to both of his teams.

“We believe we could bring a lot to the table that could be tremendously positive for the Pistons franchise, the NBA and the fans of this community,” Ilitch said.

Ilitch bought the Red Wings in 1982 and the Tigers a decade later in 1992. The talk of Ilitch buying the Pistons comes at a time where the Red Wings are looking for a new home. The team’s lease at Joe Louis Arena expired in July. While many are speculating that the Red Wings could move to the Palace of Auburn Hills, Ilitch has been adamant about keeping the team in Detroit in the past.

Illitch said he has notified the Pistons of his interest in buying the team and would be a “local and engaging owner.”

The question is…. if Ilitch buys the Pistons will April in the D become Ilitch in the D?

Look Smart: MLB trade deadline

July 31st is the MLB’s non-waiver trade deadline. This means all that all players under contract can no longer be traded. If a player is placed on waivers, any team can claim him. The waiver trade deadline is August 31. The MLB was business across the country and across both the National and American league. But who exactly were the winners and losers?

Yankees were the biggest movers in the trade deadline, acquiring Lance Berkman, Austin Kearns, and Kerry Wood

Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox who are 6.5 games back from the Yankees traded for Jared Saltalamacchia. Saltalamacchia came from the Texas Rangers, who in return got  QB Chris McGuiness, RHP Roman Mendez, a player to be named later and cash considerations. Also acquiring “a player to be named later” are the New York Mets who traded Mike Jacobs to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Hotlanta, this year’s sleeper team, traded for Rick Ankiel and Kyle Farnsworth from the Kansas City Royals. Also in the National League, the San Francisco Giants made amends to their pitching staff by trading for pitchers Javier Lopez and Ramon Ramirez.

A depleted Chicago Cubs team traded for Blake DeWitt and minor league prospects to try and salvage any hope. The struggling LA Dodgers acquired Ryan Theroitt and Ted Lilly.

With so many names being thrown around… just look smart and know that the Yankees yet again made big moves.
