NHL All-Star captains to pick teams

The NHL has struggled in ratings compared to the other major sports teams, and to fix this problem the general managers have proposed an idea that the NHL All-Star captains be responsible for choosing the NHL All-Star teams. The first six starters will be voted on by the fans for each conference. The top vote winners in each conference would be named captain, and the two captains will choose the rest of the roster (dodgeball schoolyard style). The proposal was presented by Brendan Shanhan, Hall of Famer and President of the Players Association at the general managers meeting in Toronto. Shanahan said, “We’ve worked for a little while now on this idea and this concept closely with the NHLPA. They like the idea, some of the players they’ve talked to, potential all-stars, they seem energized by it.”

Russian hockey league teams up with Playboy to find sexiest fan

In the newest issue of GQ Magazine, Russian hockey star Alexander Ovechkin talks about his love for Russian women. Ovechkin was named Russia’s most eligible bachelor by the Tatler and told GQ magazine, “Why do you think that is, that when an American goes to Russia for a week, he stays for two extra weeks? Girls! And when a Russian goes to America for a week, he leaves in five days. I’m serious! There’s a statistic!”

It seems the KHL, Russia’s premier hockey league, has taken Ovechkin’s advice and is capitalizing on the sex appeal of its female fans. Hot Ice, the KHL’s official magazine, has teamed up with Playboy Russia to find the league’s sexiest hockey fan. Women are encouraged to submit pictures and write why they love their favorite KHL team. The winner will be named Playmate of the month for April 2011.

Mario Lemieux tells Sidney Crosby: No TV for figthing

The picture above is of Pittsburgh Penguins captain and hockey golden boy Sidney Crosby fighting Dallas Stars’ Matt Niskanen. This is Crosby’s fifth fight in his NHL career. The altercation came late in the game as the Penguins were down 4-1. Normally, players do Crosby’s dirty work for him, but he tried the tactic to rally the troops. Unfortunately, it did not work as the Penguins lost 5-2.

I suspect after the game was over, Penguins owner and hockey legend Mario Lemieux grounded Crosby from TV for a month. Crosby has taken a lot of flack for living with Lemieux from 2005 until this season.

Remembering Bob Probert

Legendary hockey bad boy Bob Probert died tragically this past summer of cardiac arrest. Although Probert spent most of his NHL days in and out of legal troubles, he was always the go to tough guy. Probert played most of his career with the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. Before his death, Probert wrote a memoir with Kristie McLellan Day titled “Tough Guy: My Life on the Edge.” The Detroit News published excerpts from the book today, and it sums everything that made Probert the hockey player that he was…

I had a little trouble staying current with my probation requirements, so the Red Wings cut a deal with a judge that I would spend one night in jail. They didn’t tell me, because they were afraid I would disappear. Assistant coach Colin Campbell phoned me up and said, “I’ll pick you up at 8 a.m. Have a suit and tie on.
So the next morning, I got into his car and he said, “OK, look. We’re going to see a judge. We’ve cut a deal. You’re going to spend one night in jail.”
I said, “Oh, that’s just a bunch of bull!”

He said, “We’ve cut a quiet deal. The media doesn’t know. The judge is going to clear out the courtroom, and all you are going to do is spend one night in jail. I brought some stuff for you. Sweats and a toothbrush.”
So we appeared in front of the judge, and he says, “Mr. Probert, I don’t agree with this, I feel your punishment should be much harsher, but we’re going to have you spend one night in jail for breaching your probation. What do you have to say for yourself, Mr. Probert?”
And I said, “Well, I think it’s a joke, Your Honor!”
Soupy looked really choked and he whispered, “Probert … you idiot.”
The judge looked up from his binder and said, “You think it’s a joke, Mr. Probert?”
I was trying to step away from Soupy because he was kicking me, and I said, “Well, I don’t think it’s right. They didn’t tell me about this.”
The judge said something like, “Mr. Probert, I’m allowing this deal against my better wishes. But I know you will be back here. You’ll screw up again. So for now, you’ll spend one night in jail. Now get out of here.”
