In an effort to make the NHL All-Star game more appealing, the league is pulling out all the stops… including the addition of the Fastest Goalie competition in Saturday night’s SuperSkills competition. Watch at Carolina Hurricanes Cam Ward and Boston Bruins Tim Thomas race towards the finish #FAIL
The sport of hockey is used to crazy things being thrown on the ice… hats, octopus, plastic rats, but eyebrows were raised on Dec. 20 when a Toronto Maple Leafs fan threw waffles on the ice after the Leafs lost to the defending Eastern conference champions the Philadelphia Flyers. The man in question was 25-year old John Robb who faced legal action from the Original 6 origination. Robb was charged with criminal mischief and faced 30-hours of community service and probation, but according to the Toronto Star the charges has been dropped and Robb is a free man:
“I said, let’s keep ’er going. We pay the same money. Why can’t we throw waffles because we think they’re playing bad,” he said. “People throw hats when they think they’re playing good. Why can’t we do something to show disapproval for what’s happened over the past 44 years — especially in my lifetime, 25 years of robbing us and lies?”
The Leafs have not won a Stanley Cup since 1967. Unfortently for Robb, while charges were dropped he still faces a lifetime ban from the Air Canada Centre. Looks like someone Leggoed his Ego.
Nick Lidstrom and Eric Staal have been voted by the players selected to be captains of the 2010 All-Star game.
Lidstrom is the Detroit Red Wings captain and oldest player named to the All-Star roster, while Staal is only 26 he is captain of the Carolina Hurricanes who will host the All-Star game on Sunday January 30.
I normally don’t root against the Detroit Red Wings, but a Columbus Blue Jacket’s fan started a Twitter revolution during the Blue Jackets game on Friday against the Wings. In an effort to beat their division rival, Jackets fan Tyler Schweinfurth tweeted he would donate $20 to the player who scored the game winning goal to the “money on the board.” “Money on the board” is a tradition in hockey where players right down a money sum on a whiteboard before a big game. The money is only collected if the team wins and is normally donated to a charity.
The Blue Jackets got in on Schweinfurth tweet and so did 150 other fans (including Red Wings fans). It’s a good thing Columbus won because $10,000 was donated to charities including the Red Cross and the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation. RJ Umberger scored in a shootout to make it 3-2.
