Big 10 to rename Leaders and Legends Divisions

After angering the entire Midwest, Big 10 commissioner Jim Delany will reconsider the division names Legends and Leaders for the Big 10 Conference. The conference was divided after it expanded to 12 teams this past summer. The division names were revealed earlier this week. But for starters, the new logo looked as if Delany made it during his free trial of Photoshop, and teams like Indiana, who has never won a Rose Bowl, is in the Legends division. Now, Delany wants to fix what was wronged by renaming the divisions. The commissioner made the announcement on WGN Radio this morning:

“We’ve had enough experience with names and expansion and development of divisions that we know that you rarely get a 90 percent approval rating. But to get a 90 percent non-approval rating was really surprising. It showed that we didn’t connect with our fans in a way that we wanted to. It’s humbling, to say the least, because we’re trying to build fan bases, not push them away.

In the interview, Delany revealed the names “Great Lakes” and “Great Plains” were considered as possible alternatives, but they would not have accurately described all of the schools geographical locations. Another name was also “Stars” and “Stripes” but was turned down because it was too general.

Special congrats to Greg Jarrett who interviewed Delany. Greg is a great friend and a former boss, when I interned on his show at WGN. Greg is the only person I know who would ask the commissioner if Legends was a Gentlemen’s club. To hear the full interview click here.

Vikings asking fans to help shovel out University of Minnesota stadium for Monday’s game

The roof of the Metrodome will not be repaired by Monday’s Minnesota Vikings-Chicago Bears game. On Sunday, snow collapsed the roof of the team’s stadium, and Vikings officials have asked the NFL for the game to be played at University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank. The new location would allow the game to still be played in the Vikings’ home state, the only problem is they are having trouble shoveling all the snow in time for the game.

In some areas, the snow is as much as five feet deep, and now Vikings fans are being asked to help shovel. The University of Minnesota is looking for volunteers from Thursday-Sunday to shovel out snow from the bleachers, concourse and football field.

While you will not be paid for your manual labor, don’t worry the university will supply you shovels.

Awkward Joe Paterno interview- can’t hear audio on Tampa sports radio show

Joe Paterno has been the coach of Penn State since 1966, so all in all fairness we’ll give the 84-year old a pass for not being able to hear the radio host during this horrible interview gone bad. JoePa was on Tampa’s sports radio show WDAE to talk about his Nittany Lions trip to the 2010 Gator Bowl versus the Florida Gators. Can you hear me now Joe?

Look Smart: Heisman Trophy Ceremony

What: The most prestigious award in all of college sports will be awarded tonight in New York. The Heisman Trophy goes to the MVP in college football. Past award winners include Tim Tebow, Barry Sanders and OJ Simpson. This year’s Heisman Trophy is extra exciting because it has all the makings of a great reality TV series, including the villain, the underdog, and the good guy. Based on position alone quarterbacks are favored to win. In the past 10 years, eight quarterbacks have won the award. The Heisman Trophy ceremony is one the few times a game won’t be on at a bar. Who doesn’t love an award ceremony, even if there isn’t a red carpet.
