Video: Crazy Georgia fan

Good thing this reporter didn’t tell this crazed Georgia fan the Bulldogs are only 2-4! The beauty of sports is that you are allowed to act like an idiot all in the name of your team… and you can discover your inner WWE wrestler.

My sports pet peeve: Sports teams who adopt “Don’t Stop Believing” as “their” song

The San Francisco Giants are up two games to one against the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series. In an attempt to rally their team and fans, the Giants have adopted Journey’s song “Don’t Stop Believing” as their playoff anthem. The Giants are not the first sports team to claim the song as their own…. among other baseball teams in the past include the Minnesota Twins and the Chicago White Sox. Being from Detroit, I take extreme offense to team’s who think it is “their” song, considering the song was written in Detroit and even references the city in the song. Even putting my ultimate sports pet peeve aside, the song is out of control corny. The question remains… what are some of your sports pet peeves?

NHL star players get gritty

The new NHL season just started on Wednesday, but star players are coming out swinging (literally), with a don’t mess with me approach. It is NHL code not to mess with a team’s talented players, and if they do teams have designated enforcers to protect them. But so far this season, the stars have been the ones taking matters into their own hands. Detroit Red Wing Pavel Datsyuk challenged Anaheim Ducks Corey Perry. Datsyuk surprised many fans at his ability to hold his own because he is a former Lady Bing winner, for the league’s most sportsmanship like player… which usually translates into being a wimp. Even the Red Wings’ opponents were talking about Datsyuk’s technique.

“I guess he really can do it all,” said Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews. The Red Wings played the Blackhawks on Saturday. “He must be sick of all the trophies he’s collected at the end of every year, whether it’s the Lady Byng or the Selke awards. I’ll have to look out for him in the scrums, I guess.”

In Saturday night’s Devils Capitals game, there was a total of five fights, and Russian all-star Ilya Kovalchuk was at the helm. Devils Kovalchuk took on Capitals Mike Greene. In response, Devils coach John MacLean said, “Mike Green is one of those players trying to get something going, I guess. Ilya is a big guy. He can take care of himself.”

But Kovalchuk himself is not too worried, “Hockey is a contact sport. A fight is part of the contact. Sometimes it happens.”

Although the NHL season has just started, it is too early to tell if the league’s fighting culture is changing. In the past decade, fighting has been on the demise. With the institution of the salary cap, many teams do not have room for enforcers, but as Kovalchuk and Datsyuk have proven… they can take matters into their own hands just fine, and it makes for great TV!

Video: Oregon mascot Dougies and college football rankings

The University of Oregon had a big win over Standford Saturday night as the No.4 Ducks beat No.9 Standford, 52-31. The win gave Oregon the edge in the AP College Football rankings as the Ducks earned the No.3 spot, beating out Bosie States. Bosie State spent the entire first month of the college football season at No.3 but slid to No.4. Other surprising rankings, for the first time in 10-years Texas is not in the top 25. The Longhorns suffered back to back losses to UCLA and Oklahoma respectively. With the Michigan Michigan State showdown just a week away, things just got a little more competitive. Michigan State’s 34-24 win over No.11 Wisconsin got them the No.17 spot in the newest rankings. The Wolverines are just one spot away ranked No.18.

As the college football rankings saw its biggest shuffle of the season, the Ducks had reason to celebrate… shown by their mascot who showed the crowd how to “Dougie” at Saturday’s game.
