Madonna to play Super Bowl half time show

I am willing to be most NFL fans do not have “Like a Virgin” or “Material Girl on their iPods, but they will be hearing those songs at this year’s Super Bowl.

SB Nation is reporting Madonna has reached a deal with the NFL to play at this year’s Super Bowl half time show. Although Mage’s rep says there’s “nothing to confirm at this point,” the Super Bowl would coincide with the singer’s Spring 2012 album release.

Madonna has built her career on controversy, causing many NFL insiders to be suprised by the move. The FCC came down hard on the league after Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction in 2004. CBS was slapped with a record breaking $550,000 fine, and the NFL banned MTV from ever producing a Super Bowl half time show again.

While Madonna isn’t the easily identifiable sports fans such as past acts like Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, the 53-year old singer did have a well publicized romance with New York Yankees Alex Rodriguez!

Ndamukong Suh and Javid Best save football team’s Homecoming

Detroit Lions Ndamukong Suh is known as one of the fiercest players in the NFL, but the defensive tackle showed he has a softer side when him and teammate Jahvid Best saved a Detroit high school’s Homecoming.

On Monday, Detroit’s Frederick Douglas College Preparatory Academy’s locker room was burglarized. The intruders stole over 20 helmets, pads and cleats, leaving the football team with no equipment to practice with and the possibility of having to
forfiet the school’s Homecoming game.

Suh, Best, Quicken Loans, Boby Max Ford, Xenith Helmet, and two Detroit suburban high schools raised money and donated new equipment for the Hurricanes. The new gear was hand delivered by none other than Suh and Best before the game, which Douglas went on to win, 50-0.

“I was so pleased and thankful … because most of these young men, to have things taken from them, it was very personal,” said athletic coordinator Michael Hamlett.
The Detroit Lions are 4-0 for the first time since 1980 after over coming a 24-point deficit against the Dallas Cowboys. Looks like America’s team was just defeated by America’s sweetheart.

Jessica Simpson pregnant with former NFL player Eric Johnson

Oh baby! In Touch Weekly is reporting Jessica Simpson is pregnant with her fiance and former NFL player Eric Johnson. According to a source, Simpson turned away champagne at Johnson’s 32nd birthday party and is having sweet & salty cravings. The couple’s November wedding is still a go, and Simpson has said this is “the best wedding present” they could have asked for.

Simpson dated Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo for two years, and despite her jersey chasing past it’s Johnson who is being criticzed for being in the relationship for money. Johnson played five years with the San Francisco 49ers from 2001-2006 before being released. Although, the Yale grad had a quick stint with the New Orleans Saints in 2007 and was again released…. hopefully this time he is in it for the long haul!

Are Americans addicted to football?

In a new study by the University of Alabama, doctors say Americans are addicted to football. Dr. Joseph Kalpow said, “If a person is thinking about football while doing other things, irritated when a game is interrupted, missing family or other important events to watch a game or depressed, angry or violent when a team loses, that signals a loosening grip on reality and too much adoration for a game.”

This comes to no surprise to many considering the NFL is worth more than the NBA, NHL, and MLB COMBINED! The average franchise is worth $96 million… when some teams like the Dallas Cowboys are worth $1.5 billion, and in 2006 the league made over $3.5 billion in merchandise sales alone.

The league itself is not just a cash cow, but other markets are cashing in on America’s addiction. Fantasy Football makes $2 billion. There are between 20-30 million people who play Fantasy Football each week and spend an average of up to nine hours a week refreshing their fantasy stats.

But Dr. Klapow says there is hope… if you or someone you know suffers from football addiction:

  • Keep a log for one week of how much time is spent watching, listening or playing online sports.
  • Set limits, such as one sporting event per week, two hours or less watching sports, etc.
  • Allow your family an opinion on those rules, which might include not missing important family gatherings, such as birthdays or anniversaries for sporting events.
  • Substitute new behaviors for sports viewing, such as exercise or spending time with family or friends.
  • Seek help from a mental health professional to help address concerns regarding your habit.
