Fans throw waffles at Toronto Maple Leafs

Octopi, plastic rats and now waffles can be added to the list of crazy things hockey fans throw on the ice. After the Toronto Maples Leafs lost to the Philadelphia Flyers, Leaf fans threw waffles on the ice to show their frustration at the 10-14 Maple Leafs. After the game, winger Colby Armstrong said:

“Who brings waffles to a hockey game, really? Had we won the game, he was going home with soggy waffles so, I don’t know. Whatever. I don’t appreciate it really, a guy throwing waffles at me when I’m skating by. We’re trying to make light of it in here. Throw a T-bone. Spend some money. Throw a filet.”

Bon Appetit!

Paul McCartney’s Red Wings sticker guitar in new XM commercial & the story behind the sticker

Paul McCartney’s new XM commercial for Run with the Band has an editing error involving his iconic “Red Wings” guitar. The commercial is for McCartney’s upcoming performance at the Apollo Theatre this weekend on December 13, which will be broadcast on the satellite radio station.

In the commercial, Paul McCartney can be seen in the first and ending shot with his Red Wings guitar, but the sticker is missing in the commercial’s middle shot.

McCartney’s Red Wings guitar has become famous among hockey and Beatles enthusiasts. The sticker was added to the guitar back in 1976, when McCartney played a concert at Olympia Stadium, home to the Detroit Red Wings.

It has been widely disputed that McCartney has the sticker because either a fan gave the singer the sticker or he used the Red Wings locker room as his dressing room, both could be true. But what is known, is McCartney has had the sticker on the guitar ever since and uses the guitar to play the song Yesterday. It is also the same guitar he used on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Another possible reason McCartney could have an attachment to the sticker (besides the obvious that the Red Wings are the greatest team ever) is that the guitar was made in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

In 2006, the guitar manufacture, Epiphone re-issued 2,000 models of the FT-79N and even sold it with the Red Wings sticker. Over the summer, McCartney played at the first ever concert at the Consol Energy Center, home to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins organization gave McCartney a Penguins sticker to add to the guitar… temporarily of course.

British hockey teams in bench clearling brawl

British hockey teams the Coventry Blaze and the Nottingham Panthers of the “Elite” Hockey League can be seen in the video above in a good old fashion bench clearing hockey brawl. One’s first reaction is probably that of disbelief hearing English play hockey, but when you remember how bad their teeth are it makes sense since they don’t have to worry about any teeth getting knocked out in a fight!

Sidney Crosby Alexander Ovechkin Vanity Fair photo shoot

Hockey stars Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin are in the new issue of Vanity Fair for the January 1st Winter Classic against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals.

The NHL tried to leverage the metrosexual readership of Vanity Fair to expand their fanbase for a sport where the mullet is acceptable and fighting is encouraged. Despite the NHL’s effort, Vanity Fair only printed a 290-word preice withouth any quotes form either athlete. But let’s face it, Vanity Fair is way classier than anything Ovechkin would have said.

This year’s Winter Classic is at Pittsburgh Steeler’s Heinz Field, and while the Capitals don’t have a particularly strong fan base, the main reason for this match up is because of the Ovechkin Crosby rivalry.

The two stars are polar opposite, not only in their playing style but Ovechkin loves his Russian ladies… while Crosby still lives at the home of Penguins owner Mario Lemuiex.

In a Vanity Fair online exclusive interview, Crosby touches on their rivalry saying, “It always feels like there’s a bit more there just because of the emotion, because of the intensity. I guess that’s what makes rivalries—when it seems like there’s a little bit extra there…He’s got speed; he’s big; he’s physical. He can score from pretty much anywhere.”

Another noteworthy comment from Crosby is that his favorite player is Steve Yzerman. After being a fan of Crosby from when he was 13 (creepy I know), I had to abruptly end my Crosby fanhood when he cheated me out of seeing the Red Wings win two Stanley Cups in person (2008′s Game 5 and 2009′s Game 7). Finding out Crosby is a fan of Yzerman, only the greatest player ever, may have just reignited the flame.
